Hello Out There!

YooHoo! .... Anybody home?

Yes, I am! Don't keep standing there on the doorstep, come on in, sit down, chat awhile.

As you might guess, a lot has happened during the two-and-a-half years since I last had my say here, and I'll be yapping about that soon enough.

Now however, with January already ticking away and those January birthdays upon us, it's high time to think about this month's birthstone - Garnet.

Handmade Earrings - Garnet, Tourmaline, Sterling Silver

"Garnet." Simply speaking the word conjures images of deep rich reds, lovely and luscious burgundies. For example, the focal briolettes in these Gemstone Earrings.

But there's more to garnet that first meets the eye.

Perhaps you already know that the semi-precious stones also come in lush shades of green. This bracelet shows the grossular variety, alternating with the traditional dark red garnet.

Beautiful in ensemble with other stones, pearls and crystals in dressy, often glamorous, jewelry designs, garnets are also right at home with silver and gold beads and components.

But standing alone? With copper? Yes, indeed!

In the necklace pictured below, a classic faceted garnet adds a single touch of elegance to a casual heart shaped pendant, handcrafted of solid copper wire.

However a designer may approach it, the garnet will always be a popular favorite - with artisans and wearers alike.

I'll be writing more about garnet - its composition, properties, history and lore - before this month is over and amethyst takes the stage.

For now, however, with my husband Joe cooking his famous fried eggs for lunch, I'm heading off to the table for a yummy Sunday feast.
