October will be over in just a few days. Already our glorious autumn foliage has faded and the leaves are beginning to scatter across the yard and tumble in the breeze.
But look! What's that up there in the branches, hanging on so tenaciously?
It's "One Last Leaf" -- the one that inspired my farewell to October jewelry set, which I just listed for Etsy Project Embrace.
The lovely hammered copper leaf was created by the super talented Deedee of DnJ Dichroic Art Glass.
~ I've created an 18-1/2" strand of cranberry and topaz luster freshwater pearls, copper beads, copper plated spacers, and an antiqued copper chain. The matching bracelet is 8" long. The earrings measure 2" from the tops of their copper colored niobium earwires.
~ Both hammered copper clasps are handcrafted, and I've given them a warm antiqued patina to match the pendant.
I'll donate 10% of the proceeds from the sale of "One Last Leaf" to the American Cancer Society in honor of my friend and fellow Etsian Laura Slocum ~ lauraslocumpainted.etsy.com.

Daniel Frohman Presents ... a Theatrical Memoir. And a slow learner.
Since I was already online after lunch, Joe asked me if I'd list an item in his Etsy shop.
Sure. Happy to. So, he hands me this faded and well-worn book, an autobiography from 1937, and I take a peek at some photos (hmmm ... those look interesting) and start writing the description (hmmm ... this author has a nice prose style) ...
Fast forward about three hours --
Okay, granted I'm on dial up (again, alas), and listing anything is pretty slow going. But THREE HOURS???? How can that be?
Well ... er ... ahem. I did it again. Started reading the book and ... more than three hours later, I've learned quite a lot about the New York theatre scene in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
But what I haven't learned is to put down the darned book and get on with the business of listing.
Just hope it sells before I find it again (to prevent further distraction, Joe has it hidden away) ... or after I've snooped it out and finished reading.

But do beware -- it'll entrap you before you know it! And that's a tip from one who knows!

Back to the Woods! -- wooden jewelry components, that is ...
After spending many days and weeks working with copper (jewelry, Christmas ornaments {coming soon to this blog}, and home decor), I've come "home" to my first love -- working with Joe's handcarved hardwood beads.
For this super-long necklace (adjustable up to over 25"), I made a chain of beaded copper links. The beads are Joe's rough cut faceted spheres and leaves, and some lightweight and lovely reddish brown rounds that came to me as part of a vintage necklace. I believe they are lucite from the middle of the 20th century.
For the pendant, Joe split one of his spheres and I woodburned the face. We then glued it to one of his flowers and added three of his leaves. From the top of the beaded bail, the pendant is 2-7/8" long.

New Treasury for Etsy Project Embrace
It isn't often that I have two treasuries running at the same time, but that's what happened this afternoon. Treasury West opened and I was ready! So until just after midnight tonight, I'll have both this new one and a main Treasury list ("The Nebulous Kingdom") up simultaneously.
The title for my new list "Did you say ... BURGUNDY????" came to me after a couple of my favorite items from different shops looked so darn good side by side. After those two, it was a snap to fill the other spaces. In fact, I could have filled up two or three treasuries -- maybe more -- with lovely beautiful burgundy selections.
I chose widely this time, first browsing the shops of my fellow Etsy Project Embrace (EPE) Team members and then branching out with a general search for the terms "burgundy" and "gold."
As it turned out, seven of the dozen featured sellers are EPE team members. There's quite a variety too -- a dress, ribbon, jewelry, soap, a photograph, a little gift box, a journal, a Christmas ornament, a bookmark, a cell phone charm and a tablecloth! I'm delighted with this treasury and have included the four alternates in the image.
Till 10:43 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19th, you can view this collection by clicking here:http://www.etsy.com/treasury_list_west.php?room_id=72222

Autumn in Maine ... and a New Copper Item for Etsy Project Embrace
Here's our Maple Leaf Copper Dish, inspired by the glorious autumn colors of Down East Maine.
Joe and I were out and about running errands this afternoon, first to the local post office (3 miles away), then on to Blue Hill (17 miles away), where we bought more sheet copper, and the grocery store for ice cream, eggs, and a few other necessities.
Usually I balk at having to leave my home-cum-studio, but today I was ready to go. The sun was shining, the air was brisk, and of course there was copper on the list. But the main attraction for me was the chance to take one last peek at the glorious fall foliage between home and Blue Hill. The birches are bright yellow and gold, the maples are fiery red and orange, and against the background of deep green conifers -- well, it was all a sight to behold! Next time the wind kicks up or the rain comes down, the leaves will go and winter will be with us, de facto if not officially. Even as I write this, the temperature is dropping. We'll dip into the low 30s again tonight, and tomorrow we'll begin "hunkering down" for the remainder of October. Early next month, we'll head out again for provisions and such -- to Ellsworth (32 miles away) and restock our keeping room shelves again.
But for now, there's Joe's Irish Soda Bread baking in the oven, our own apples steaming on the stove, a new necklace for me to begin tonight, and tomorrow -- a bright new sheet of copper, awaiting the shears, the hammer, the flame ...
Ah ... Life is Good!
Joe cut the leaf from 18 gauge sheet copper, and I hammered and and shaped it by hand. A flame bath and buffing brought out its rich range of fall colors -- from burnt orange and yellow gold to hot pink and coral. There are even a few glints of lavender. It's perfect for Autumn -- and all year too!
The dish measures approximately 5-1/2" x 5-7/8". It's now listed in my Etsy Shop, so please click here to view it there.

Two Etsy Treasuries for Etsy Project Embrace - One from Each Shop
Happy Day! I have two EPE* linked treasuries currently running on Etsy! My previous EPE treasury got bitten by the infamous stacking bug (which eats one of the 12 spaces, leaving it totally and incurably blank), so no hope for a front page for that one. ~ LOL ~ Maybe I've finally learned not to move my selections around quite so fast.
"Bug Spray Needed!" by Rough Magic Holidays will run until 5:30 Tuesday morning, October 6. I sprayed it good to fend off the stacking bug!

*Etsy Project Embrace (EPE) is a an effort by a number of Etsy sellers to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, for research and awareness in support of all those whose lives have been touched by cancer. The project began when one of our own, Laura Slocum ~ creativelytangled.etsy.com and lauraslocumpainted.etsy.com ~ was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer and began a grueling chemo schedule, which continues today. Many of these sellers are donating all or a portion of their profits from EPE designated items to the ACS. Many also promote EPE through posts on their blogs, Facebook and Twitter, and through many EPE linked treasuries like the two I now have running. Buyers may participate by spreading the word about EPE and, of course, by searching for and purchasing items tagged "teamepe" (or the older tag "etsyprojectembrace") on Etsy.com.
