On a Gray January Day in Maine

No doubt about it, these gray days of January can be daunting, even to those of naturally sunny disposition and optimistic outlook.

The temperatures rise just enough to melt a bit of the snow, then they fall just enough that the melt turns to glare ice.

Everywhere we look, the landscape fades to monochromatic - gray sky, gray shadows, gray birch trees. Even the waters of the bay seem to have lost their luster.

Normally I love the quiet. The kind of deep winter quiet when you can hear the snow whispering down. But this time of year even the silence seems oppressive.

What to do? What to do?

Go somewhere?
Nah.
Only turkeys venture out on a day like this.

Putting on my thinking cap ...

Maybe I'll punish some copper ...

Nah.
I'd probably smash my finger.

Or build a cairn ...

 Nah.
I'd only knock it down, probably on my foot.

Maybe I'll take a nap ...
Nah.
Too late in the day. (And besides, that ground is cold!)

To early for dinner. Too late to take photos.

Wait! I know what I'll do!!!  I'll make a treasury!!!

Well hey! I'm thinking gray may just be my favorite kind of day!
