A poem and a treasury inspired by it ...

In masks outrageous and austere ...
Now let no charitable hope
Confuse my mind with images
Of eagle and of antelope:
I am by nature none of these.

I was, being human, born alone;
I am, being woman, hard beset;
I live by squeezing from a stone
What little nourishment I get.

In masks outrageous and austere
The years go by in single file;
But none has merited my fear,
And none has quite escaped my smile.

~ Elinor Hoyt Wylie (1885-1928)

  1. Mollie, I love the new look! Especially the birds in flight up there at the top.... perfect! Good work, and I know you had FUN doing it too!

    Love this poem... that line "I am, being woman, hard beset".... wow! That one line sings out to me, but of course being in the middle of the poem surrounded by the images, the emotions, the very words (NOW to open the poem) which put everything front and center and in the present... well, it just speaks volumes, especially to me at my current age! Thanks for sharing it, and that very cool treasury!!!!
